What is Edge Case?
Overview
In the design system, edge cases often threaten to break a system and the user experience. Edge cases deal with the extreme maximums and minimums of parameters, these are events that are outside the scope of a product's primary function.
An edge case is a problem or condition that occurs only at extreme (maximum or minimum) operating parameters. For example, a stereo speaker can noticeably distort audio when played at maximum volume, even in the absence of another extreme setting or position.
An edge case can be expected or unexpected. In engineering, the process of planning and addressing edge cases gracefully can be an important task, and yet this task may be overlooked or underestimated.
