What is Law of Common Region?
Overview
The law of Common Region theory states that objects within a range are treated as a group and share some common characteristic or functionality. The border around the three middle circles in this graphic makes them appear related and as part of the same group.
Law of Common region: We have a strong tendency to view objects as groups when they are within the same region of space.
When visible elements are surrounded by a clear boundary in the same closed area, we see all objects within this area as a separate group from all other surrounding elements. As you can see from the image below, by simply adding a black border around the three points we see them as distinct from the points on the outside, even though they share the same proximity, size, and color.
