What is Line Length?
Overview
Line Length refers to the number of characters per line. In typography, line length is the width of a block of typeset text, usually measured in inches or points or characters per line. A block of text or paragraph has a maximum line length that fits a defined design.
The line length is the distance between the left and right edges of the text block. Extremely long lines are a common problem, but they are easy to fix. Short lines will make a big difference in the readability and professionalism of your layout.
Line length is determined by typographic parameters based on formal grids and templates, with several goals in mind: balance and function for fit and readability with sensitivity to aesthetic style in typography. Typographers adjust line length to create legibility or copy fit.
